biophilia
The idea behind Biophilia was biologist Edward O. Wilson's work of that same title. According to the Wikipedia entry, "The biophilia hypothesis suggests that humans possess an innate tendency to seek connections with nature and other forms of life."
I became interested in this idea when I discvoered the Japanese practice of "Shinrin Yoku," also know as "forest bathing" or "forest therapy." This is one practical aplication of the biophilia hypothesis.
